In 2007 I got a Love Music Hate Racism CD free with an NME magazine. The CD, and the creation of LMHR generally, was a direct response to the fact that at the time, the British National Party were targeting young people by distributing racist music in schools.
LMHR asked contemporary artists, from Bloc Party to Babyshambles, to write and contribute music especially for the project. Thirteen years later, and the lyrics to one of the specially commissioned tracks had such a profound effect on my fourteen year old brain, that the words have stuck with me all this time. This is song is where I first encountered ideas of white privilege, racism against black people specifically, and the notion of systemic racism.
It is deeply saddening that it could have been written yesterday.
